πŸ›Ÿ May Is Water Safety Month: Let’s Protect What Matters Most

At A Safe Pool, we believe that water fun should never come at the cost of safety. That’s why we’re proud to recognize May as National Water Safety Month β€” a time to raise awareness, educate families, and take action to prevent drownings before summer heats up.

Why Water Safety Month Matters

Every year, thousands of water-related incidents happen in backyard pools, especially among young children. Drowning is still the leading cause of unintentional death for children ages 1–4. The good news? Drowning is preventable β€” with the right layers of protection, education, and equipment in place.

5 Layers of Protection Every Pool Owner Needs

We follow and promote the 5 Layers of Protection β€” a nationwide standard for drowning prevention:

  1. Barriers and Alarms

It's important to use four-sided fencing with self-closing, self-latching gates, pool safety covers, and alarm systems, to help prevent children and unauthorized adults from accessing water unsupervised.

  1. Supervision

Stay vigilant and aware of your surroundings with close, constant, and capable adult supervision from a designated water watcher or lifeguard anytime children are in or around water.

  1. Life Jackets

When used appropriately, life jackets protect you when you are not expecting to be in the water, especially around open water. Ensure your life jackets are tested & approved by the USCG.

  1. Water Competency
Every child and adult should be equipped with the skills to protect themselves in water by learning and enhancing their basic water safety skills to reduce the risk of drowning and aquatic-related injuries.

  1. Emergency Preparedness & Education

Knowing how to prepare for an emergency with CPR training with rescue breaths and basic water rescue skills can make the difference between life and death. Have a phone available and ready to call 911.

What We're Doing This Month

To support families and communities this May, A Safe Pool is:

  • Sharing free pool safety resources and checklists

  • Partnering with organizations to spread awareness (National Drowning Prevention Alliance, Leslie's Pool Supply, & Michael Phelps Foundation)

  • Podcasting to spread the word

Be a Pool Safety Advocate

Whether you're a new pool owner, a parent, or a concerned neighbor, you have a role to play in water safety. Install the right layers. Stay alert. And don’t wait until it’s too late.

This May, let’s turn awareness into action and make water safety a priority in every backyard.
